The organisers of the Clare Island Charity 10k are looking to build on the success of last year’s race which has now raised over €16,000 for Cancer Care West.
This year the event will take place on Saturday, February 22nd at 1pm with all the proceeds again in aid of the west of Ireland cancer charity – Cancer Care West. The race has been an overwhelming success over the past 2 years with almost 500 participants taking part in the unique event.
The Clare Island 10K is the idea of Donal O’Shea, former cancer patient and retired Development Officer for Clare Island. Donal was diagnosed with cancer in March 2011 and stayed at Inis Aoibhinn, Cancer Care West’s residential facility, while undergoing six weeks of preoperative radiotherapy at University Hospital Galway.
Living on one of Ireland’s west coast islands, Donal is acutely aware of the support needed by many cancer patients and their families who have to travel to Galway for their cancer treatment. He is appreciative of the support he received from Cancer Care West and, wanting to give something back and help raise funds and awareness for the charity, decided to organise the inaugural Clare Island 10k, which took place 2 years ago.
Fundraising Manager, Sharon Fitzpatrick of Cancer Care West commented; “The charity walk/run is a great way to take in the breathtaking views of Clare Island, while raising monies that will allow Cancer Care West to continue its work here in the West. We’ve had wonderful support from everyone on Clare Island and from runners and walkers wanting a unique 10K experience, and we’re sure this year will be no different.”
This year’s race was moved to February to accommodate those who wish to start the running season early and the entry fee is €38, which includes return boat trip, race entry, water and refreshments before and after the race. There is B&B and hostel accommodation on the island for those who would like to stay a night or make a weekend of it. Runners and walkers are welcome as well as non race participants, once you register all you need to do is show up on the day.
Go on, the scenic route alone will leave you breathless !
