In honour of the 60th anniversary of a historic event that left an indelible mark on a nation, the release of an extraordinary documentary “JFK – The Three Miles’’, is set to captivate audiences across the United States: In June 1963, President John F. Kennedy embarked on a visit that would forever reshape America’s perception of Ireland. Kennedy himself referred to his Irish sojourn as “the best four days of his life.” This documentary rekindles his remarkable journey through Galway and pays tribute to the enduring legacy of President John F. Kennedy, whose influence continues to inspire and fascinate generations.
The documentary masterfully captures the infectious excitement that swept through the local community during Kennedy’s visit, as seen through the eyes of those who were present on that historic day. The people of Galway were granted a rare opportunity to bask in an atmosphere of anticipation and to engage with a figure as prominent as the President of the United States.
“JFK – The Three Miles” enjoyed dual premieres in both Ireland and the United States. The documentary made its initial debut in Ireland at Pálás Cinema on June 24th, 2023, followed by a screening at Galway City Museum on June 29th, 2023, marking the 60th anniversary of Kennedy’s momentous visit to Galway. The grand finale of its premiere tour was held at the JFK Hyannis Museum in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, on June 30th, 2023, in the heart of the Kennedys’ beloved Cape Cod.
Galway native Pamela Finn, the documentary’s director, achieved recognition for her outstanding work, earning the prestigious title of Best Director at the Washington DC International Cinema Festival. Additionally, the film received an Honourable Mention at the Athens International Monthly Arts Film Festival and the remarkable distinction of Best Documentary Short at the Cannes World Film Festival.
Throughout the documentary, a resounding message echoes: President Kennedy left an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of the local people. His charisma, warmth, and profound connection with the community transcended borders and time, forging an enduring bond between Ireland and America.
Stan Shields, a journalist from Galway’s local newspaper, The Connacht Tribune, warmly recalls Kennedy’s down-to-earth nature and the President’s endearing term for him – ‘friend’. Norrie Quinn, who was just thirteen when the President visited her hometown, fondly remembers being one of the Irish dancers tasked with entertaining him in Eyre Square, the vibrant heart of Galway City.

John F Kennedy visited Ireland in 1963 while he was President of the United States. Kennedy referred to this visit as “the best ‘four days of his life’“, one of which he spent in Galway City. President Kennedy swept aside protocol and security and shook hands with hundreds of local people and signed autographs.
